How to Appear on Google: Concrete Steps to Make Your Business Visible in Search

Equipo de Creativos Digitales ESP 5 min read

Appearing on Google depends on three conditions: Google has to find your page, understand what it is about and consider it a good answer to what your customers are searching for. There is no trick that does it overnight: there are concrete steps you can apply in order, and this guide explains what they are and where to start.

It is written for freelancers and small businesses that want visibility without big budgets. If you already have a website, start with step 2; if not, with step 1.

    1. A page of your own that Google can read

To appear, you first need an address to index. A Facebook page or an Instagram profile does not replace a website: Google indexes them, but you do not control what they show and you cannot gather your services, opening hours and quotes there. If you do not have a website yet, this is the starting point; a professional web design with one page per service is the foundation everything else works on.

If you already have a website, check that it is finished and accessible: no "under construction" pages, nothing blocking Google from reading it, and each service described on its own page.

    2. Register your website in Google Search Console

Google Search Console is the free dashboard where Google shows you which pages it has indexed, which searches show your website and which errors it finds. Registering your website is free and takes minutes:

    • Verify that the website is yours (Google offers several ways to do it).
    • Submit your sitemap so Google knows all your pages.
    • Review the indexed pages section and fix whatever it flags as an error.

Without this step you cannot measure whether the rest of the work is paying off.

    3. Your Google Business Profile: the fastest route for a local business

If your business serves an area (shop, workshop, office, home service), many of your customers search for "your service + your town" or "near me". What appears first there is not the website: it is the Google Business Profile listing and the map.

Create or claim your listing, verify that you are the owner and complete it: correct category, real opening hours, phone number, services, current photos and description. Once verified, the listing can start showing your business on Google Maps within days; ranking the website takes longer, so if you have to prioritise, start here. On our Google Business Profile page we explain how we manage it, and this guide gives you the steps to optimise it yourself.

    4. Service pages written in your customers' language

Google shows the page that best answers each search. For that, each service needs its own page with:

    • A title that says what it is and where it is offered.
    • Text explaining what it includes, who it is for and how to hire it.
    • The real questions customers ask you, answered on the page itself.

This is the core of SEO work; if you want to see how we approach it, it is described in SEO positioning.

    5. Content that answers real searches

A blog with articles that answer specific questions (how much it costs, how to choose, what it includes) helps Google associate your website with your sector and show you in searches a service page does not cover. It is not about publishing for the sake of it: a few articles that answer your customers' real questions well are better than many.

If you are wondering about the next step —turning those visits into enquiries—, in how to get customers with Google we compare the four channels that decide whether Google brings you enquiries or just visits. And once you appear in search and want AI assistants to cite you too, see our guide on GEO SEO and how to appear in ChatGPT.

    6. Reviews and consistent details

Real customer reviews influence the decision of whoever finds you and also your presence in local searches. Ask for them systematically: for example, when you finish each job, with the direct link to your Google listing.

Also check that your name, phone number and website are identical on your Google listing, your website and the directories where you appear. Inconsistencies confuse both Google and customers.

    7. How long it takes to show

    • Google listing: it can start appearing on Maps within days, once verified.
    • New website pages: they are indexed in days or weeks, and their position improves over time if the content answers the search well.
    • Overall ranking: it builds up over months of consistent work; nobody can guarantee a position or a date.

Be wary of anyone promising the top spot: that position does not depend on whoever promises it, and techniques that look for shortcuts end up costing visibility.

    8. Mistakes that stop you appearing

    • Publishing the website without registering it in Search Console or submitting the sitemap.
    • Generic service pages that describe the same thing everyone else does.
    • An unverified Google listing, with outdated opening hours or no photos.
    • Duplicate content or content copied from other websites.
    • A slow website or one that looks bad on mobile: people who arrive and leave do not come back, and that behaviour is recorded.
